Life's a Circus For The Durrells

The final episode of season 3 of The Durrells aired last night on ITV and left us begging for a fourth season.
The final episode was bursting with laughter, joy and sadly heartbreak with Louisa Durrell (Keeley Hawes) commenting that, "It's been a bad day for love."

In the beginning of the episode it was revealed that a travelling circus had arrived in Corfu; with eldest son Larry falling in love with a contortionist, Gerry performing with the animals, Margo becoming a wannabe magician and Louisa and Spiro drumming up business by advertising on behalf of the circus (pictured below).

The episode was brimming with laughter and funny moments as Louisa declared that "Life is a circus" - in which we each perform on life's stage.

On a website entitled 'PositivelyPresent' (http://www.positivelypresent.com/2012/06/life-is-a-circus.html), writer David Niven said there are 5 life lessons to take from the circus;

1) Be the ringmaster. It's your life.
2) You're on a tightrope. Keep your balance.
3) Toss your hat in the ring. Get involved.
4) Set up a sturdy net. You will need back-up.
5) Clown around. Life's too short to be serious.

The Durrells is a sparkling and brilliant series that is full of life, love and family - Mrs Durrell truly is the 'Agony Aunt' of Corfu; bringing wisdom, advice and joy to our Sunday night viewing.

Talking of joy; we noticed that throughout the series Louisa and taxi-driver Spiro had been growing closer together as their relationship developed - it left us begging them to finally embrace their romantic feelings for each other. There was a moment during the circus, when a first kiss between the pair looked imminent, but alas, it wasn't to be as the moment was cruelly snatched by a display of fireworks - a cold yet special teaser from Screenwriter Simon Nye.

Although a relationship between Louisa and Spiro looked set in stone, Spiro announced that his wife and children had returned to him during the end of the episode. It left us with a heart-wrenching and tearful scene as Louisa and Spiro ended a relationship before it had even had the chance to bloom - not the conclusion to a love story that we all craved. Louisa may act like the 'Agony Aunt,' but sadly she is full of agony of her own.
It ended with wise words from her as she stated; "Well we all have our different hats, don't we?" and further said that she would return to wearing her "love-lorn widows veil" along with her mothering hat which is more "like a crash helmet."
It is true that we become different people depending on who we are with - we become more loving for our partners, more strong for our children and more contemplative for our parents. As a whole; we become who we are needed to be, and it was sad for Louisa as she returned to being a "love-lorn widow" - especially because she is so deserving of love.

She announced that "It's been a bad day for love," as Larry's contortionist companion left with the travelling circus, Margo's Turkish boyfriend, Zoltan had to leave for his home country and Leslie's pregnant girlfriend Daphne, declared that the baby was not his and that she was to marry the real baby's Father. The only Durrell not to be affected by this spreading heartache is Gerry, who remains happy with Galini.

The final episode left viewers with tear-stained tissues as we leave Louisa Durrell in the midst of heartache - yet again.
This series of The Durrells was full of love, romantic entanglements, growth and friendship as each member of the Durrell clan navigated the bittersweet waters of life. As each relationship broke down and came to a heart-shattering end, it was clear that the main focus of this series was the strength of family and friendship.

In a final conclusion to the series, Larry introduced Louisa to some guests who had arrived from London (thanks to Larry's travel journalism) to explore the island of Corfu.
In the hope that a season 4 is commissioned, it looks like next season could have an idea of a guesthouse on the cards. With that, there is only one way to know if season 4 is on the table...consult the talking head...
