A Guide to the Explosive Finale of Bodyguard

The finale of Jed Mercurio's Bodyguard was watched by an astounding 10.4 million people - the average of whom suffered from bitten down fingernails, heart palpitations and heavy sweats. The final episode was intense, Ma'am, as Specialist Protection Officer David Budd, unraveled the conspiracy behind the death of ambitious Home Secretary Julia Montague.

Below, we examine the classified files of each suspect. Ma'am.

David Budd

After his time as a Helmand veteran, Sergeant David Budd serves as a Principal Protection Officer and is later assigned to protect Home Secretary Julia Montague.

Suffering from PTSD, Budd protected Julia Montague even though she voted in favour to have the military mobilize in the Middle East.

Budd later began a sexual liaison with the Home Secretary and after her death, became obsessed with learning the truth behind her murder.

Julia Montague

Home Secretary Julia Montague worked to push a counter-terrorism bill - known as RIPA18 - through parliament. The bill would have given Security Services wider surveillance and the ability to monitor online activity.

Julia had secret meetings with the Director General of the Security Service (Stephen Hunter-Dunn), and is later provided with a kompromat from Security Officer Richard Longcross. This kompromat enabled Julia to contact the Prime Minister at Chequers and blackmail him.

Before her death, Julia planned to use the kompromat to make a move into leadership.

Stephen Hunter-Dunn

Stephen Hunter-Dunn worked as the Director General of the Security Service and ordered Longcross to provide Julia with the kompromat that allowed her to blackmail the PM.

Hunter-Dunn and Julia Montague had secret meetings and conspired in ways to move Julia into a position of leadership.

As Julia favoured the Security Service over the police, she gave the Security Service more responsibility and allowed them to assume a role in interviewing the 1/10 bombers. In return, the Security Service provided Julia with dirt on the Prime Minister.

If Julia had succeeded in becoming Prime Minister, the Security Service probably would have taken up a bigger role in policing.

Richard Longcross

Richard Longcross is a member of the Security Service and acted as liason between Julia Montague and the Service. He provided Julia with the kompromat and after her death, attempted to retrieve it; believing that Budd knew of its whereabouts.

Roger Penhaligon

Roger Penhaligon acts as Government Chief Whip and is also Julia's ex-husband.

He conspired with Mike Travis and Rob Macdonald to politically embarrass Julia as she gave a speech at St Matthews College.

Roger is a firm supporter of the Prime Minister and accused Julia of acting against the PM. To stop her from being in a strong position to make a leadership bid, Penhaligon conspired to sabotage Julia's speech by making sure it hadn't been correctly fact-checked.

Mike Travis

Mike Travis was the Minister of State for Counter-Terrorism and worked with the Home Secretary to investigate terror events.

After becoming jealous of the secret meetings between Julia and the Security Service, Travis conspired with Penhaligon and Rob Mcdonald to sabotage Julia's speech.

As a supporter of the Prime Minister, Travis also resented the idea of Julia making a leadership bid.
After her death, Travis became acting Home Secretary. (And also looks more likely to become Prime Minister in a possible Season 2)..

Could this have been what Travis wanted all along?

Rob Macdonald

Rob Macdonald worked as Special Advisor to the Home Secretary and harboured a romantic crush on Julia. After a dinner date between the pair failed, Rob felt embarrassed and aimed to embarrass Julia in return.

He conspired with Travis and Penhaligon to sabotage Julia's speech by not appropriately fact-checking it and gave the documents to Julia's PR (Tahir Mahmood). Rob told Tahir that the speech had been fact-checked.

Rob later changed his mind regarding the plot and rang Tahir last minute to inform him that the speech hadn't been appropriately edited.

Tahir Mahmood

Tahir Mahmood worked with Julia as her PR Advisor before an explosion at St Matthews killed them both.

After Rob called him last minute to tell him that Julia's speech hadn't been fact-checked, Tahir attempted to warn Julia by approaching the side of the stage.

Unbeknownst to him, this action mean't he activated a pressure sensor on a bomb that had been planted under the stage.

Luke Aitkins

Luke Aitkins is an organised crime boss and is behind the murder of Julia Montague.

Aitkins made sure that a bomb was planted under the stage at St Matthews College where Julia Montague was giving her speech.

Aitkins hated that RIPA 18 would have given the Security Service wider access to surveillance - including allowing them to monitor criminal activity.

The crime boss also believed that by giving the Security Service more responsibility than the police, officers would no longer be open to bribery or corruption.

The bomb was only planted after Andy Apsted's assassination attempt on the Home Secretary failed - Andy was provided with the rifle and Julia's itinerary by Luke Aitkins.

In an attempt to frame David Budd for Julia's murder, Aitkins swapped Budd's bullets for blanks to keep Budd alive as a scapegoat. Aitkins also fitted David Budd with the same type of bomb vest used by the 1/10 bombers to assure his guilt and to try to establish a tight connection between Budd and the terrorists.

Andy Apsted

Andy Apsted was a veteran from David Budd's unit in Helmand.
After returning to the UK, Andy started an activist group who wanted peace in the Middle East.

After hating everything that Julia Montague stood for and because she voted in favor for military action, Andy Apsted became a sniper and failed to assassinate the Home Secretary by shooting at her ministerial car from a rooftop.

Both the rifle and Julia's itinerary was provided to him by Luke Aitkins.

Lorraine Craddock

Chief Superintendent Lorraine Craddock worked as David Budd's commanding Officer and assigned Budd to the Home Secretary because of his military experience.

However, Craddock was eventually uncovered as a corrupt officer and admitted to providing crime boss Luke Aitkins with Julia's itinerary and security information.

This information enabled Aitkins to plant a bomb at St Matthews and orchestrate the attempted assassination of the Home Secretary, by providing Andy Apsted with Julia's itinerary.

Chanel Dyson

Chanel Dyson acted as PR Advisor to the Home Secretary before she was fired and replaced by Tahir Mahmood.

It is clear that Chanel's wealth came from criminal activity after it is revealed that she works for crime boss Luke Aitkins.

Chanel contacted David Budd after Julia's death and offered to take him out for a drink - this led to Aitkins beating David Budd and fitting him with a bomb vest.

Nadia

Nadia is a young woman who attempted to act as a suicide bomber on a train - later known as 1/10. After reassurance from David Budd, Nadia failed to detonate the device and was taken into custody.

We later learn that Nadia had been providing the police with false information and was actually the engineer who built both the bomb that killed Julia Montague and the bomb vests.

Nadia also provided the names of Budd's children to her terrorist organisation, who then attempted to attack the primary school.

Anne Sampson

Anne Sampson is head of the Metropolitan Police's Counter Terrorism Command and reported to the Home Secretary.

After Julia appointed the Security Service to interview the 1/10 bombers, Commander Sampson was frustrated to lose the investigation. In a petty act of revenge, Sampson failed to provide David Budd and Julia Montague with support from Specialist Firearms Officers after Andy Apsted fired upon the ministerial car.

After Julia's death and the kompromat had been recovered, Sampson leaked the information of the kompromat to the press - as revenge against Head of Security Stephen Hunter-Dunn. This act pushes Hunter-Dunn to resign and consequently forces a resignation from the Prime Minister.

Once you've finished reading these classified files, Ma'am, please return them to the Security Service.
