5) First Female Doctor - Doctor Who (BBC One)

A part that had been previously played by men, we watched as the twelfth Doctor regenerated into the first ever female TimeLord in Doctor Who. Eccentric and flamboyant, this female incarnation of the character displays the same energy as the previous twelve male versions of the character before her. This fresh-faced version of the Doctor kicks alien arse just as effectively as her male predecessors and provides little girls with a new hero.

6) Tris Prior - Divergent series

Based on the series of books by Veronica Roth, the films follow Tris as she sets out to rebel against a constraining society that categorises its citizens by their personality-related affiliation. This series teaches girls that they should and can be whoever they want to be, and that they shouldn't let themselves be defined by anything or anyone.

9) Alex Drake - Ashes to Ashes

Thrown into the 1980s, DI Alex Drake navigates through this male-dominated time with ease. Facing sexism - especially in the Police department, Drake banters with her male colleagues with maturity and sass.
